Strengths:
Strengths include a low rate of uninsured population at 10.1
percent, ready access to adequate prenatal care with 80.8 percent
of pregnant women receiving adequate prenatal care and a high rate
of high school graduation with 81.3 percent of incoming ninth
graders who graduate within four years. Ohio ranks higher for
health determinants than for health outcomes, indicating that
overall healthiness should improve over time.

Challenges include many poor mental health days per month at 4.0
days in the previous 30 days, a high rate of cancer deaths at
215.2 deaths per 100,000 population, a high prevalence of smoking
at 22.4 percent of the population and a high prevalence of obesity
at 28.4 percent of the population.

Disparities:
In Ohio,
blacks experience 64 percent more premature death than whites.
Deaths from cancer in the state are 25 percent more prevalent
among blacks than whites. In the large metropolitan areas,
residents in the central counties experience 24 percent more
premature death than those in the fringe counties.
