OHIO

Ranking:  Ohio is 29th this year; it was 25th in 2006. 

Strengths: Strengths include a low rate of uninsured population at 10.1 percent, ready access to adequate prenatal care with 80.8 percent of pregnant women receiving adequate prenatal care and a high rate of high school graduation with 81.3 percent of incoming ninth graders who graduate within four years.  Ohio ranks higher for health determinants than for health outcomes, indicating that overall healthiness should improve over time.  

Challenges: Challenges include many poor mental health days per month at 4.0 days in the previous 30 days, a high rate of cancer deaths at 215.2 deaths per 100,000 population, a high prevalence of smoking at 22.4 percent of the population and a high prevalence of obesity at 28.4 percent of the population.

Significant Changes:

↑ In the past year, the prevalence of obesity increased from 24.3 percent to 28.4 percent of the population.

↑ In the past year, the number of poor mental health days per month increased from 3.3 to 4.0 days in the previous 30 days.

↓ Since 1990, the incidence of infectious disease decreased from 17.1 to 10.2 cases per 100,000 population.

↓ Since 1990, the rate of deaths from cardiovascular disease decreased from 343.4 to 333.3 deaths per 100,000 population.

Health Disparities: In Ohio, blacks experience 64 percent more premature death than whites. Deaths from cancer in the state are 25 percent more prevalent among blacks than whites. In the large metropolitan areas, residents in the central counties experience 24 percent more premature death than those in the fringe counties.
