NORTH DAKOTA

Ranking:  North Dakota is 8th this year, unchanged from 2006.

Strengths: Strengths include a low violent crime rate at 128 offenses per 100,000 population, a low incidence of infectious disease at 3.8 cases per 100,000 population, few poor mental and physical health days per month at 2.5 days and 2.8 days respectively in the previous 30 days and a high rate of high school graduation with 86.1 percent of incoming ninth graders who graduate within four years.

Challenges: Challenges include a high prevalence of binge drinking at 21.0 percent of the population, a high percentage of children in poverty at 16.3 percent of persons under age 18, a high prevalence of obesity at 25.4 percent of the population and a high occupational fatalities rate at 8.3 deaths per 100,000 workers.  North Dakota ranks lower for health determinants than for health outcomes, indicating that overall healthiness may decline over time.

Significant Changes:

↑ In the past year, the percentage of children in poverty increased from 13.3 percent to 16.3 percent of persons under age 18.

↑ In the past year, the incidence of infectious disease increased from 3.0 to 3.8 cases per 100,000 population.

↑ Since 1990, the violent crime rate increased from 57 to 128 offenses per 100,000 population, though it remains one of the lowest in the nation.

↓ Since 1990, the prevalence of smoking decreased from 26.4 percent to 19.5 percent of the population. 

Health Disparities:  In North Dakota, blacks experience 54 percent more premature death than whites.  Other Races experience 148 percent more premature death than whites.
