MONTANA

Ranking:  Montana is 18th this year; it was 22nd in 2006. 

Strengths: Strengths include a low incidence of infectious disease at 4.7 cases per 100,000 population, high per capita public health spending at $293 per person and a low prevalence of obesity at 21.2 percent of the population.

Challenges: Challenges include a high rate of uninsured population at 17.1 percent, limited access to primary care with 103.5 primary care physicians per 100,000 population and low immunization coverage with 73.6 percent of children ages 19 to 35 months receiving complete immunizations.

Significant Changes:

↓ In the past year, the percentage of children living in poverty decreased from 19.8 percent to 17.2 percent of persons under age 18.

↓ In the past year, the violent crime rate decreased from 282 to 254 offenses per 100,000 population.

↓ Since 1990, the incidence of infectious disease declined from 23.2 to 4.7 cases per 100,000 population.

↓ Since 1990, the infant mortality rate decreased from 9.8 to 5.5 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Health Disparities: In Montana, Other Races experience 111 percent more premature death than whites.   Blacks experience 44 percent more premature death than whites.
