Strengths:
Strengths include a low prevalence of binge drinking at 9.3
percent of the population, ready access to adequate prenatal care
with 81.3 percent of pregnant women receiving adequate prenatal
care and a low violent crime rate at 299 offenses per 100,000
population.
Challenges:
Mississippi is among the bottom five states on 11 of the 20
measures. Challenges include a high percentage of children in
poverty at 28.8 percent of persons under age 18, a high prevalence
of obesity at 31.4 percent of the population, a high prevalence of
smoking at 25.1 percent of the population and a high rate of
deaths from cardiovascular disease at 398.2 deaths per 100,000
population.

year, the rate of uninsured population increased from 16.9 percent
to 20.8 percent.

Health
Disparities:
In
Mississippi, blacks experience 41 percent more premature death
than whites. Deaths from cancer are 27 percent more prevalent
among blacks than whites.
