MARYLAND

Ranking:  Maryland is 28th this year; it was 32nd in 2006. 

Strengths: Strengths include ready access to primary care with 179.0 primary care physicians per 100,000 population, a low percentage of children in poverty at 10.9 percent of persons under age 18, few poor physical health days per month at 3.0 days in the previous 30 days and a low prevalence of smoking at 17.7 percent of the population. 

Challenges: Challenges include a high incidence of infectious disease at 36.9 cases per 100,000 population, a high violent crime rate at 679 offenses per 100,000 population and limited access to adequate prenatal care, with 70.1 percent of pregnant women receiving adequate prenatal care.

Significant Changes:

↓ In the past year, the percentage of children in poverty decreased from 13.3 percent to 10.9 percent of persons under age 18.

↓ In the past year, the violent crime rate decreased from 704 to 679 offenses per 100,000 population.

↓ Since 1990, the infant mortality rate decreased from 11.6 to 7.5 deaths per 1,000 live births.

↑ Since 1990, the rate of uninsured population increased from 8.9 percent to 13.8 percent.

Health Disparities: In Maryland, blacks experience 75 percent more premature death than whites.  In the large metropolitan areas, residents in the central counties experience 152 percent more premature death than residents in the fringe counties.
