IOWA

Ranking:  Iowa is 14th this year; it was 11th in 2006. 

Strengths: Strengths include a low infant mortality rate at 4.9 deaths per 1,000 live births, few poor mental and physical health days per month at 2.5 days and 2.9 days in the previous 30 days, respectively, and a high rate of high school graduation with 85.8 percent of incoming ninth graders who graduate within four years. 

Challenges: Challenges include a high prevalence of binge drinking at 20.5 percent of the population and limited access to primary care with 81.8 primary care physicians per 100,000 population.

Significant Changes:

↑ In the past year, the rate of uninsured population increased from 8.3 percent to 10.5 percent.

↑ In the past year, the prevalence of smoking increased from 20.4 percent to 21.4 percent of the population.

↓ Since 1990, the incidence of infectious disease decreased from 9.8 to 6.1 cases per 100,000 population.

↑ Since 1990, the violent crime rate increased from 231 to 284 offenses per 100,000 population.

Health Disparities: In Iowa, blacks experience 64 percent more premature death than whites.  Deaths from cancer are 45 percent more prevalent among blacks than whites.
