HAWAII

Ranking:  Hawaii is 3rd this year; it was 4th in 2006. 

Strengths: Strengths include a low rate of uninsured population at 8.8 percent, a low rate of preventable hospitalizations with 32.2 discharges per 1,000 Medicare enrollees, a low rate of deaths from cardiovascular disease at 224.6 deaths per 100,000 population and a low rate of cancer deaths at 153.7 deaths per 100,000 population. 

Challenges: Challenges include a high prevalence of binge drinking at 17.5 percent of the population, low immunization coverage with 80.1 percent of children ages 19 to 35 months receiving complete immunizations, limited access to adequate prenatal care with 66.1 percent of pregnant women receiving adequate prenatal care and a high incidence of infectious disease at 21.5 cases per 100,000 population. 

Significant Changes:

↓ In the past year, the occupational fatalities rate decreased from 6.6 to 5.4 deaths per 100,000 workers.

↑ In the past year, the violent crime rate increased from 256 to 281 offenses per 100,000 population.

↓ Since 1990, the percentage of children in poverty decreased from 20.7 percent to 10.5 percent of persons under age 18.

↓ Since 1990, the prevalence of smoking decreased from 27.6 percent to 17.5 percent of the population.

Health Disparities: In Hawaii, deaths from cancer are 36 percent less prevalent among blacks than whites.  There are minimal differences among races for premature death.
