ARIZONA

Ranking: Arizona is 33rd this year; it was 34th in 2006.

Strengths: Strengths include a low rate of cancer deaths at 184.5 deaths per 100,000 population, a low rate of deaths from cardiovascular disease at 276.4 deaths per 100,000 population, a low prevalence of obesity at 22.9 percent of the population and a low prevalence of smoking at 18.2 percent of the population.

Challenges: Challenges include a high rate of uninsured population at 20.9 percent, low immunization coverage with 74.8 percent of children ages 19 to 35 months receiving complete immunizations, limited access to primary care with 92.4 primary care physicians per 100,000 population and limited access to adequate prenatal care with 67.6 percent of pregnant women receiving adequate prenatal care.  Arizona ranks lower for health determinants than for health outcomes, indicating that overall healthiness may decline over time.

Significant Changes:

↓ In the past year, the high school graduation rate decreased from 75.9 percent to 66.8 percent of incoming ninth graders who graduate within four years.

↓ In the past year, the percentage of children in poverty decreased from 21.6 percent to 20.0 percent of persons under age 18.

↓ Since 1990, the prevalence of smoking declined from 29.5 percent to 18.2 percent of the population.

↓ Since 1990, the incidence of infectious disease decreased from 91.0 to 20.4 cases per 100,000 population.

Health Disparities: In Arizona, blacks experience 27 percent more premature death than whites.  In the large metropolitan areas, residents in the central counties experience 25 percent less premature death than residents in the fringe counties.
