RANKING: Utah is 6th this year; it was 4th in 2005.

STRENGTHS: Utah ranks among the top ten states on 8 of the 18 measures. Strengths include a low prevalence of smoking at 11.5 percent of the population, a low infant mortality rate at 4.7 deaths per 1,000 live births, a low rate of cancer deaths at 156.3 deaths per 100,000 population, a high rate of high school graduation with 80.2 percent of incoming ninth graders who graduate within four years, a low violent crime rate at 227 offenses per 100,000 population and a low percentage of children in poverty at 11.8 percent of persons under age 18.

CHALLENGES: Challenges include low immunization coverage with 74.1 percent of children ages 19 to 35 months receiving complete immunizations and low per capita public health spending at $72 per person.

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES:

In the past year, the percentage of children in poverty decreased from 12.9 percent to 11.8 percent of persons under age 18.

In the past year, the rate of uninsured population increased from 14.1 percent to 16.6 percent.

Since 1990, the infant mortality rate decreased from 8.7 to 4.7 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Since 1990, the incidence of infectious disease decreased from 30.4 to 7.9 cases per 100,000 population.

HEALTH DISPARITIES: In Utah, the percentage of women who receive prenatal care varies from 57 percent among Native Americans to 84 percent among whites. Cancer is 16 percent more prevalent among whites (412.2 cases per 100,000 population) than Hispanics (355.7 cases per 100,000 population).

CLINICAL CARE: The cost of clinical care in Utah is low compared to other states and the quality of care is low.
