STRENGTHS: Strengths include a low incidence of infectious disease at 4.2 cases per 100,000 population, high immunization coverage with 86.9 percent of children ages 19 to 35 months receiving complete immunizations, a low violent crime rate at 176 offenses per 100,000 population, few poor mental and physical health days per month at 2.6 days and 3.0 days respectively in the previous 30 days, and a high rate of high school graduation with 83.0 percent of incoming ninth graders who graduate within four years.

CHALLENGES: Challenges include a high rate of motor vehicle deaths at 2.1 deaths per 100,000,000 miles driven, a high prevalence of obesity at 25.5 percent of the population, a high occupational fatalities rate at 8.2 deaths per 100,000 workers and a low per capita public health spending at $110 per person.

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES:

In the past year, the percentage of children in poverty decreased from 18.6 percent to 16.0 percent of persons under age 18.

In the past year, the premature death rate increased from 7,104 to 7,653 years of potential life lost before age 75 per 100,000 population.

Since 1990, the violent crime rate increased from 120 to 176 offenses per 100,000 population.

Since 1990, the prevalence of obesity increased from 10.7 percent to 25.5 percent of the population.

HEALTH DISPARITIES: In South Dakota, the percentage of women who receive prenatal care varies from 59 percent among Native Americans to 83 percent among whites.

CLINICAL CARE: The cost of clinical care in South Dakota is low compared to other states and the quality of care is high.
