STRENGTHS: Strengths include a low rate of motor vehicle deaths at 1.2 deaths per 100,000,000 miles driven, high immunization coverage with 84.1 percent of children ages 19 to 35 months receiving complete immunizations, ready access to adequate prenatal care with 80.8 percent of pregnant women receiving adequate prenatal care and a low incidence of infectious disease at 9.9 cases per 100,000 population.

CHALLENGES: Challenges include a high rate of cancer deaths at 214.6 deaths per 100,000 population, a high prevalence of smoking at 22.3 percent of the population, a high infant mortality rate at 7.8 deaths per 1,000 live births and a high rate of deaths from cardiovascular disease at 343.4 deaths per 100,000 population.

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES:

In the past year, the prevalence of smoking decreased from 25.8 percent to 22.3 percent of the population.

In the past year, the immunization coverage increased from 79.5 percent to 84.1 percent of children ages 19 to 35 months receiving complete immunizations.

Since 1990, the incidence of infectious disease decreased from 17.1 to 9.9 cases per 100,000 population.

Since 1990, the rate of uninsured population increased from 8.7 percent to 12.3 percent.

HEALTH DISPARITIES: In Ohio, the percentage of women who receive prenatal care varies from 78 percent among Hispanics to 90 percent among Asians/Pacific Islanders. Cancer is 20 percent more prevalent among blacks (466.3 cases per 100,000 population) than Hispanics (390.0 cases per 100,000 population).

CLINICAL CARE: The cost of clinical care in Ohio is low compared to other states and the quality of care is moderate.
