STRENGTHS: Strengths include a low percentage of children in poverty at 8.8 percent of persons under age 18, a high rate of high school graduation with 87.0 percent of incoming ninth graders who graduate within four years, a low prevalence of smoking at 18.0 percent of the population, high per capita public health spending at $231 per person, a low rate of motor vehicle deaths at 1.0 deaths per 100,000,000 miles driven and a low infant mortality rate at 5.1 deaths per 1,000 live births.

CHALLENGES: Challenges include limited access to adequate prenatal care with 63.4 percent of pregnant women receiving adequate prenatal care and a high incidence of infectious disease at 28.3 cases per 100,000 population.

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES:

In the past year, the percentage of children in poverty increased from 8.4 percent to 8.8 percent of persons under age 18.

In the past year, immunization coverage decreased from 82.7 percent to 78.2 percent of children ages 19 to 35 months receiving complete immunizations.

Since 1990, the infant mortality rate decreased from 9.6 to 5.1 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Since 1990, the rate of uninsured population increased from 8.8 percent to 15.2 percent.

HEALTH DISPARITIES: In New Jersey, the percentage of women who receive prenatal care varies from 64 percent among blacks to 89 percent among whites. Cancer is 25 percent more prevalent among whites (518.6 cases per 100,000 population) than Hispanics (413.9 cases per 100,000 population).

CLINICAL CARE: The cost of clinical care in New Jersey is high compared to other states and the quality of care is high.
