STRENGTHS: Strengths include a low incidence of infectious disease at 4.5 cases per 100,000 population, high per capita public health spending at $293 per person, a low infant mortality rate at 5.3 deaths per 1,000 live births, a low prevalence of obesity at 21.3 percent of the population and a high rate of high school graduation at 81.0 percent of incoming ninth graders who graduate in four years.

CHALLENGES: Challenges include a high rate of motor vehicle deaths at 2.2 deaths per 100,000,000 miles driven, a high occupational fatalities rate at 12.9 deaths per 100,000 workers and a high percentage of children in poverty at 19.8 percent of persons under age 18.

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES:

In the past year, the percentage of children living in poverty increased from 16.5 percent to 19.8 percent of persons under age 18.

In the past year, the rate of uninsured population declined from 19.1 percent to 17.4 percent.

Since 1990, the prevalence of obesity increased from 8.7 percent to 21.3 percent of the population.

Since 1990, the violent crime rate increased from 151 to 282 offenses per 100,000 population.

HEALTH DISPARITIES: In Montana, the percentage of women who receive prenatal care varies from 66 percent among Native Americans to 87 percent among whites. Cancer is 6 percent more prevalent among whites (451.5 cases per 100,000 population) than Hispanics (425.6 cases per 100,000 population).

CLINICAL CARE: The cost of clinical care in Montana is low compared to other states and the quality of care is high.
